10 MENTAL HEALTH MOTTOS FOR THE NEW YEAR
Updated: Jan 8, 2019
Daily affirmations have the power to transform and strengthen lives by giving us the ability to manifest a desired action or belief. The words that we tell ourselves are extremely powerful; when we tell ourselves positive mantras, it is more likely that we will believe these thoughts and cultivate a healthy relationship with ourselves. There is a part of our brain called the Reticular Activating System. This system ensures only important information from your surroundings gets into your conscious level of awareness. For example, have you ever had the experience of learning a new word and then that word seems to come up in your life all the time? That’s because of the Reticular Activating System. This system is constantly looking for information that confirms your thoughts. That’s why affirmations are so powerful! When we set our intention for the day or repeat our mantra over and over, our brain is now primed to look for information in our environment that validates these affirmations.
Affirmations improve self-confidence, gratitude, and productivity. Positive, healing affirmations help combat negative thoughts, rumination of unhealthy beliefs, and poor habits. Everyone struggling with mental health issues can benefit from affirmations. You may choose to repeat these affirmations first thing in the morning or right before you go to bed. They can be said at any point throughout the day. Setting an intention for the day in the morning can be a powerful act. It allows the opportunity to set a goal for the day, even if it is just to be able to notice one small, positive moment of joy. This can be beneficial for those struggling with depression or anxiety.
Affirmations can be said out loud or silently. It is especially important to state affirmations in the present tense. It is not important to believe the affirmation fully; most people won’t. The key is to appear confident in stating the affirmation and be open to the possibility of the truth of the affirmation in your life. Ideally, over time, these affirmations may feel truer for you.
Here are some powerful, healing affirmations to keep in mind:
1. All that I need to know at any given moment is revealed to me. My intuition is always on my side.
2. Life brings me only good experiences. I am open to new and wonderful changes.
3. I am worth loving. There is love all around me.
4. Breathing in, I observe letting go. Breathing out, I observe letting go.
*This is a mantra from Thich Nhat Hanh’s book, No Mud, No Lotus. This affirmation helps us to let go of anger, fear, attachment, or desire. We don’t let go of reality. We let go of our wrong perceptions about reality. The more we let go, the more we are able to see the moments of joy in our daily lives.
5. Today, I will not stress over things I cannot control.
6. I believe in the person I am becoming.
7. I forgive myself and set myself free.
8. Abundance flows freely through me.
9. I deserve the best, and I accept it now. All my needs and desires are met before I even ask.
10. I am safe.
